What Most Automated Bookkeeping Gets Wrong
Automation that guesses at your books is worse than no automation. The bar for AI bookkeeping is not speed, it is being trustworthy enough to not check.
Most "automated bookkeeping" is automation that guesses, and a guess you have to double-check is slower than doing it yourself. The tool categorizes a transaction, you do not trust it, so you review every line anyway. Now you are doing the work twice. That is not automation. That is a confident intern you have to supervise.
Speed is the wrong thing to sell
Bookkeeping software loves to brag about speed. Speed is easy and it is not the point. The point of books is that they are correct, because someone is going to make real decisions, file real taxes, and answer to real auditors based on them. A fast wrong answer in finance is more dangerous than a slow right one, because the fast wrong answer feels done. The moment automation makes a mistake you did not catch, it has cost you more than the time it saved.
The real bar is being trustworthy enough to not check
The only automation worth having in finance is automation you can stop double-checking. That is a much higher bar than "it produces a number." It means the system knows the difference between what it is sure about and what it is guessing at, and it flags the guesses instead of burying them. It means every categorization has a reason you can inspect, so when something looks off you can see why it was decided that way. I made this argument for AI products in general in why I sell assurance, not capability, and finance is where it bites hardest.
Governance is not paperwork here, it is the product
In bookkeeping, the audit trail is not a compliance checkbox. It is the thing that lets a human trust the machine. If you cannot see how a number was reached, you have to redo it, and then the automation was pointless. This is the same reason I argue governance is the product and not a feature bolted on at the end.
That standard is the whole idea behind Ficary: AI-native bookkeeping where the system shows its work, separates confidence from guessing, and earns the right to not be checked. If it cannot prove a number, it does not pretend it can.
Before you trust any bookkeeping automation, run one test. Find a transaction it categorized and ask it why. If it cannot give you a reason you can verify, you have not bought automation. You have bought more review work with extra steps.
